Imperfection — not an aesthetic choice, but a requirement  for new music.

AI is not actually a major threat to music as I see it, at least for the next half-century. I mean, it is undoubtedly a threat to mediocre impersonation — those pop musicians who make music with the sole aim of trying to get placements on streaming playlists. But is it really a threat to authentic human creation?

Why include only some artists? How do we decide?

A lot of music today feels hollow, with people romanticizing the idea of being an ‘artist’, forgetting that music has always been some sort of emotional expression, even if just to document some unidentifiable thought or feeling. As people have forgotten this core piece, and with music being treated more and more as social currency, it’s hard to find anything worth paying attention to.

Why virality hurts artists, listeners, and the industry as a whole + why it might be a good thing.

We're living in an age of profound insecurity, a threatening time for personal purpose — religious traditions decay, and we have an endless feed of digital comparison. Finding yourself used to be a slow, mostly uninterrupted process, something that took years or decades of quiet accumulation. Now it’s not so linear: you discover something about yourself, trends shift and invalidate it, you start over.

A certain purity remains unjaded by the pull of trends... AI is not a threat to his music.

sandbox.fm "Albums to listen to before you die!"

You know that feeling when you are overwhelmed with emotion so much that your brain doesn’t know what to pick? You feel like laughing, yelling, punching, crying, screaming, running– all at once. It is an extremely rare experience and one that, in turn, is both enjoyable and painful. For me, this feeling arises most often with music, although that is not to say it happens often at all (if I had to guess 1x/1-2 years).

What is sandbox.fm?

In the age of algorithm-driven, pay-to-play discovery, our goal is to cut through the noise and bridge the gap between undervalued independent artists and their current + potential audiences. We are currently focusing on expanding our Instagram community, as we platform a curated selection of like-minded artists through features, write-ups, and community interaction.

How it helps artists:

Sponsorship

Free press/promotion through both paid ads & organic reach

A sense of backing and community support
